Babel features on BBC Radio 4's 'Word of Mouth'
BBC Radio 4 run a programme called Word of Mouth, which is a weekly 30-minute exploration into language and linguistics, presented by Michael Rosen. A few months ago the lovely people from Word of Mouth came to talk to our editors, professors Dan McIntyre and Lesley Jeffries. Some of their discussions were aired in two recent Word of Mouth programmes.
Firstly, they drew inspiration from Prof. Peter Stockwell's article on alien language from our first issue of Babel, for the programme 'How do you talk to an alien?'. Then, the following week, they aired a show called Babel, which as well as introducing the magazine to Radio 4 listeners, described the biblical story and the capacity of language to unite and divide people. In this show, they also introduced another project going on at the University of Huddersfield, Language in Conflict. This initiative, started by Prof. Lesley Jeffries and Dr Jim O'Driscoll, examines how language is instrumental in creating and solving conflict.
The Word of Mouth programmes are available for UK listeners on BBC iplayer for up to a year from the date they were first aired.
